Dutch researchers have found that the pharmaceutical drug Viagra can boost erectile dysfunction in men. In the study, they compared 100 patients with erectile dysfunction who had been taking sildenafil at the start of a treatment for erectile dysfunction. They found that men who took sildenafil for a long time had a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction, compared to those who took Viagra. They added that men who had used sildenafil for a long time had an increased risk of erectile dysfunction. Viagra has been linked to an increased risk of death. One in ten men who used sildenafil for a long time died from cardiovascular disease, compared to 10 per cent of men who used sildenafil only.
It is estimated that up to 60 per cent of men in their 20s will have erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is a problem of both physical and psychological origin. It is not a disease of the heart and it affects both men and women. It may also be related to a lack of sexual desire.
Erectile dysfunction is the inability to attain or maintain an erection adequate for sexual intercourse. In the United States, about 80 per cent of men with impotence have low sexual desire. Dr Zolarehensive study carried out at Amsterdam University Medical Centre and in The Netherlands was the first study to show that men taking sildenafil for a long time had an increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
The researchers reported in the journalThe Journal of Sexual Medicinethat a man taking sildenafil for about one year had an average risk of developing erectile dysfunction of 7 per cent, compared to those taking a placebo. The risk of developing erectile dysfunction was reduced by 15 per cent among men who took sildenafil for more than five years.
One in ten men who used sildenafil for a long time died from cardiovascular disease, compared to 10 per cent of men who took sildenafil only. “We are pleased to see that sildenafil has a potentially life-saving effect on men suffering from erectile dysfunction,” said lead researcher Dr Zolarehensive study co-sterdam professor Dr Michael Reichel, head of pharmaceutical science at Pfizer.
He said: “We have already seen that sildenafil has been shown to improve sexual function in patients with erectile dysfunction, which is of paramount importance for any patient.”
Dr Reichel added that sildenafil had shown to be able to improve erectile function in many patients. “This drug has shown great promise in clinical trials and in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.”
Viagra is one of the drugs that Pfizer manufactures. In the Netherlands, Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is a generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil. It is not approved for use in men.
